I woke up this morning with The Avett Brothers song “Shame” in my head & it’s still there. Awesome song, but that can’t be a good omen…
Create Yourself as a Disney Princess … Because everyone deserves to be a Disney Princess if they want to be one.
I’m pretty as a princess … yay?
Kinda ashamed that there is only one body size though. So you better be skinny if you want to be a Princess in the Disney world. As usual. Unless you’re a “wicked” stepsister or something.

I wish “flash mob” meant something entirely different

I remember the name Brian Baker. When I was losing a double state championship in KY, Brian, from Nashville, TN, was losing the French Open Juniors singles final. We are the same age, from the same region of the USA, and played the same sport growing up. While I had scaled back my tennis playing to just high school tennis by 15, Brian was the best tennis player in the USA under the age of 18 when he was 15.
Clearly, Brian was special. He was the next great American tennis player. Ready to compete for Grand Slams and the #1 ranking. That all seems so silly now with the domination of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic dominating tennis these days. However, Baker did beat Djokovic growing up.
So what caused the downfall of Brian Baker? None of those normal stories. No drugs. The pressure wasn’t too big for him. He didn’t burn out. He didn’t get out of shape.
Quite simply, his body just quit. He endured multiple surgeries on his hip, Tommy John surgery on his elbow - rarely done for tennis players, and a sports hernia surgery. He had 5 surgeries in 2008 alone. He listened to his body and retired.
Then he became a student and coach at Belmont University at home. Eventually he stopped aching after hitting with the players he was coaching. In 2011, he started playing small tournies and winning them. He started qualifying for big events … including the 2012 French Open.
He didn’t get any wild cards from USTA. Though he would have loved one. He earned his way back.
Just a few weeks ago Baker played in his first ATP tournament since before all those surgeries. In that tournament in Nice, he made it to the finals. He beat Nikolay Davydenko (former #3 in the world, now #47 but holds a winning record against Nadal in his career) and Gael Monfils (#14 in the world) before losing to Nicolas Almagro (#13).
In the French Open yesterday, Baker beat Xavier Malisse (#77) in straight sets. He next plays Giles Simon (#12 in the world). Simon, by the way, lost in Nice to Almagro in straight sets.
Will he continue his amazing run? Does it even matter? Just getting here has been amazing. His body is holding up through 7 ATP matches in 8 days and he has nothing to lose.
Nothing to lose. World Class talent. Happy and relaxed. As long as his body finally lets him compete Baker is going to be just fine.
Atmosphere - “Puppets”
I think it’s great how you used to be great
I can’t hate on how you choose to relate
But I know that you had the potential
I understand why you wanted to let go
A lot of pressure in the middle of those shoulders
And we ain’t getting nothin’ but older
Ain’t nothin’ changed but the day we run from
But nobody knows that better than you, huh?
Married to the Sea is always amazing. Also, reminded me of this gem:
To me, the only way I am winning anything at 8 in the morning is if I am still in bed, preferably asleep
I finished second year. And doctors said it would never happen.
Honestly, a doctor told me it’d never happen…
